Nashua Cal Ripken Baseball is thrilled to announce the team names for our upcoming Spring 2025 season, connecting our young athletes to the rich baseball history of Nashua and the enduring legacy of Cal Ripken Jr. We are proud to unveil the names of our seven teams: Giants, Diamondbacks, Athletics, Dodgers, Orioles, Angels, and Pirates. Each name carries a special significance, deeply rooted in our community and the sport we love.
• Giants: This team name pays homage to a long and dedicated history within Nashua Youth Baseball. For an incredible 54 years, David Drescher volunteered and coached in Nashua. His XL Corp-sponsored team transitioned to become the Giants when MLB team names were adopted. In addition to David, his son Steve has also been a faithful figure in local youth baseball having coached, volunteered and umpired for many years. In recognition of Coach Drescher's profound dedication to the youth of Nashua, the Giants name will proudly remain.
• Diamondbacks: The Diamondbacks are named in honor of another of Nashua Cal Ripken's long-time coaches and league benefactors, Coach Darrel Barlow. Coach Barlow has been coaching with Nashua Cal Ripken for over 20 years and has been at the helm of the Diamondbacks since the adoption of MLB team names.
• Dodgers: This iconic team name directly connects to a pivotal moment in baseball history that took place right here in Nashua. The Nashua Dodgers were a Class B farm club of the Brooklyn Dodgers that played in the New England League from 1946 to 1949 at Holman Stadium. Notably, they were the first professional baseball team based in the United States in the twentieth century to play with a racially integrated roster. Legends like Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe began their careers with the Nashua Dodgers. Prior to the merger of Bambino leagues, a Nashua South League team sponsored by Pointmakers was the team eventually renamed as the Dodgers.
• Orioles: The Orioles team name links our league to the illustrious career of Cal Ripken Jr. and his deep ties to the Baltimore Orioles organization. Ripken Jr. spent his entire 20-year Major League Baseball career with the Orioles, setting numerous records, including the most consecutive games played. His father, Cal Ripken Sr., was a longtime coach and even a manager for the Orioles. Furthermore, a team in the former Nashua South League sponsored by Purity Supreme would become the Orioles when MLB naming was adopted.
• Angels: The Angels name recalls the Nashua Angels, a Class AA farm club of the California Angels that competed in the Eastern League for the 1983 season at Holman Stadium. Future Major Leaguers such as Kirk McCaskill and Devon White played for the Nashua Angels.
• Pirates: This team name recognizes the Nashua Pirates, who were the Class AA farm club of the Pittsburgh Pirates for three seasons, from 1984 to 1986, also playing their home games at Holman Stadium. Future National League All-Star Bobby Bonilla was a member of the Nashua Pirates.
• Athletics: The Athletics hold the distinction of being one of the original MLB team names used by Nashua Cal Ripken, with a history tracing back to a team sponsored by The Elks Club before the switch to MLB names. As an 'original member' of Nashua Cal Ripken, the name will continue to be used thanks to it's historical significance.
We believe these team names not only honor the history of baseball in Nashua but also inspire our young players with connections to significant figures and moments in the sport. Nashua Cal Ripken Baseball is excited to embark on the Spring 2025 season with these meaningful team identities.
Transitioning from the 2024 to 2025 Spring Majors season, existing franchises will rename accordingly.
